Climate Change Spurs Rise in Common Diarrhea Illness, Study Finds

A recent study reveals that as Earth's climate changes, certain pathogens, such as those causing the common diarrhea illness campylobacteriosis, may not just adapt but thrive. Campylobacteriosis, caused by bacteria in the Campylobacter genus, particularly C. jejuni and C. coli, shows a significant association with elevated temperatures, longer days, and increased humidity – all consequences of climate change.

Researchers from the University of Surrey examined UK Health Security Agency data covering around a million campylobacteriosis cases in England and Wales over two decades. The study used a mathematical model incorporating weather data and found a clear link between illness and climate conditions.

The results indicated that while cases remained stable at temperatures below 8 °C (46 °F), they increased steadily with every 5 °C (9 °F) rise in temperature. Infections spiked when humidity was between 75% and 80%, and longer days (more than 10 hours of solar light) showed a higher infection rate, especially when linked with higher humidity. No link was found between illness and rain or wind variables.

Giovanni Lo Iacono, senior lecturer in biostatistics and epidemiology, emphasized the societal impacts of diseases like campylobacteriosis, affecting work attendance and straining health services globally. While the study establishes a link between climate change and the prevalence of campylobacteriosis, the exact mechanism behind it remains uncertain, prompting further research.

Environmental data can aid in understanding disease spread patterns, helping identify vulnerable areas, and allocating resources to curb potential outbreaks, explained Gordon Nichols, visiting professor at the University of Surrey. The study highlights the broader impact of climate change on health, emphasizing the potential for an increase in food-borne illnesses like campylobacteriosis as bacteria thrive in changing environments.
